We can sit here an argue about who the innovators and stepping stone for the darker metal are, instead we will talk about what is to come in the future of metal. Jose Mangin, said what many metal heads out there are thinking, “Heavy metal is not dead”, as long as we have fans, metal will live, and Ozzfest Meets Knotfest is the fruit of those innovations made by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward back in late 60’s releasing their debut album in 1970. The rest is history, and then there was another set of nobody’s form Des Moines, Iowa who changed the face of metal and your typical line up of four to five members to nine musicians. I still recall waiting for the “twinkie” (school bus) to pick me up from Fairfax High School back in 1999, as I was approached by a promoter giving me stickers and a cassette of Slipknot’s EP with songs like “Wait And Bleed” and “Surfacing”, I was not ready for that genre of music yet, as I was into Metallica, Pantera, and Slayer along with some Cannibal Corpse and some Spanish rock. But here I go- I put it into my cassette player and boom!! My face almost melted off, I thought to my self-holy shit, WTF is this? So I put that cassette away, kept listening to “Cowboys From Hell” and didn’t know any better. It wasn’t until a month later that I wiped the dust of that EP and blasted the jams to my ex-gf; she had no idea what it was, as she liked Linking Park, hence why she is my ex-girlfriend. So I dumped her, and moved on to be the craziest most obsessed heavy metal fan, don’t we all claim that, no but really I sleep thinking of this shit.
So I got the news of OZZY and COREY TAYLOR doing a press conference and thought, well perhaps Ozzy is taking over Corey’s spot never mind, what am I thinking maybe they are touring together. Well the news of the new festival Ozzfest Meets Knotfest was better than fans anticipated. During the press release, fans were able to see a screening of past Ozzfest, with never before seen footage and hinting fans of what the news could be. Of course, with all the personal turmoil in Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s life, CNN, MSNbc and so forth sent their top reporters. Yea, welcome to the metal world, even through struggles, Sharon and Ozzy remain good business partners. Sharon, who is the creator of Ozzfest, intrepidly came up with the idea of joining both festivals for one weekend, perhaps a way to announce Ozzy Osbourne’s retirement and Black Sabbath end tour. Top reporter you said? Well check this out, one of those famous reporters whose name we will not mention asked the panel, “We just saw footage of people getting hurt, bleeding and using drugs. Will we expect that from this Ozzfest Meets Knotfest festival?” Corey Taylor, laughed, as other panel members said yea, while Geezer Butler exclaimed, “We can expect lots of tits”. Who knows, perhaps this festival will unite with religious groups to make it a safer one. Forget that, this is metal we are talking about people, of course there will be blood, and all the paraphernalia you can imagine, along with sex, and loud fucking metal!!! But anyways, I rambled on.
Let us rejoice in this moment, where Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax and Black Label Society will perform, along with Suicide Silence, Huntress and Disturbed. The line up is a dream come true; support this festival do not miss out on what could possibly be a once in a lifetime festival. Black Sabbath’s end is nearing, Oh yea did we mention, Zakk Wylde did a killer performance of Black Sabbath’s songs. That day May 12th, will forever remain in metal heads memories, the day metal made the headlines.
