The German band Nailed To Obscurity will be delivering a melodic/doom metal album via Nuclear Blast Records titled Black Frost. This album is melancholic and dark in all aspects. On January 11th, 2019 Black Frost will see the light of day ensuring it dims that brightness with its solemn lyrics and melodies.
The first track of the album is the self titled song “Black Frost”, which as mentioned above contains melodies that will draw you in to the whirlwind of melancholia and darkness. The track contains versatile vocals, from clean notes to growls that instill rage and madness into the listeners’ heart. It has a moment of peace, and the guitars play an eerie tune as the drums add the last nail to your coffin. That overlapping guitar riff is captivating, merging to a knee crunching guitar solo, with harmony and perfect balance of darkness and enlightenment. Nailed To Obscurity lead singer Raimund Ennenga does a magnificent job transitioning from clean vocals to what is common in the death metal scene (growls), as he conveys messages about overcoming humanities ailments. The self, that which we allow to drag us to the point of extinction. The second track titled “Tears of the Eyeless”, is another compelling track, with a poignant guitar riff that blends all elements of doom metal and melodic death metal into one. If you are looking for some heavy riffs, make sure to check out the track titled “Feardom”, where drummer Jann Hillrichs does a marvelous job maintaining the beat, adding percussion and melodies with a bang. Mean while both guitarist Volker Dieken and Jan-Ole Lamberti execute melodies to succumb you in to the void. With harmonies, this song delivers many aspects a metal head seeks to find in any artistic piece of work as such.
One must embrace the sounds of darkness, solitude and let the music instill that euphoria and misanthropic sense. With the track titled “Cipher”, you will find a grey aura surfacing from within you from the very beginning. As the song progresses, the bass and the drums add a heavier tone, yet leaving room for the shifting rhythms purveyed by both guitar sounds and gory vocals. This track alone will have you secluding yourself in the solitude of your mind, followed by some sporadic lashing of all instruments erupting in your face. The concluding song titled “Road to Perdition” kicks in with a high pitch harmonic riff, and shifts to a melodic riff complimented with clean vocals and musicianship all in all. The track lacks nothing, it harrows the listener in a solemn form, with force and allows you to enjoy each beat. Nailed to Obscurity will embark in a European tour with bands like Soilwork, Amorphis and Jinjer. They will be performing most track off their new album and deliver a neck breaking performance. We had a chat with vocalist Raimund Ennenga and guitarist Jan-Ole Lamberti about the new album, the meaning behind the album cover and title itself. Check it out below.
